Fan convectors eat radiators for breakfast

Quay West organised a successful breakfast event at The Bleeding Heart for Smith’s Environmental Products in October.  The venue was the ideal location for Smith’s to announce the news that fan convectors are 24% more efficient than a panel radiator – a figure that goes up to 31% when run on a low temperature, renewable system.

The energy efficiency research was conducted by BSRIA – the UK’s leading centre for research and information in the building services industry.  In addition to being presented with the findings, guests were also treated to a good old fashioned English fry-up.

Jim Bennett, Sales and Marketing Director at Smith’s Environmental Products, commented on this groundbreaking news: “The industry may be surprised at these results but we’re not.  We’ve always had lots of ancedotal evidence suggesting the energy saving benefits of fan convectors – but now, we have third party confirmation, so there can be no argument.”

He continued: “Radiators use natural convection and radiation to circulate heat; processes that slow considerably as you approach the ideal water temperatures required for maximum efficiency in your condensing boiler or ground or air source heat pumps.  As the water temperature in our domestic heating systems further reduces through greater use of condensing boilers and renewable technology, fan convectors become even more energy efficient and will, with energy prices soaring, represent a significant cost saving.”
